im looking for a mildly interesting 'something' to program in c. A poetry generator that, rather than writing more or less formless quatrains, creates correct sonnets (_with_ volta) and French ballads. Richard

For a small useful project, how about, a small free-form data_base_? As time passes you can improve the code. I think in today's world, it wants some serious encryption. It would work like the set of research cards grad students often develop

im looking for a mildly interesting 'something' to program in c. what have people made in the past which was fun? I have just completed an integrated development environment (IDE) for the Gnu C and C++ compiler that wraps this excellent command-line tool (and the Gnu GDB debugger) with a standard Windows look-and-feel. I ship this IDE with a lengthy C and C++ language tutorial and over 30 example projects that demonstrate both console-mode programs and true Windows GUI programs. The C++ language is the third and final language taught in my curriculum that you can read about at: www.computersciencelab.com For $15 you can purchase my Windows CD-ROM that contains the complete tool chain (editors, compilers, and debuggers) for the 3 languages (including 8051 assembly language), over 100,000 words of tutorials, and over 80 example projects. I am particularly proud of the example projects. In one project you get to drive a robotic mouse through a maze, in another you develop a Breakout video game, and in another you play an arbitrary .WAV file through the speakers while detecting and displaying the peak volume on a stereo LED bar graph.
