I wanted to try out a Whippy Tempomaster but I'm too cheap to pay $100 for one. I liked the concept of practicing with a flexible shaft, so I ordered a graphite junior flex shaft and installed it on a 5 iron head without any tip trimming. The length was correct without any trimming from the butt end of the club as well. I took it out to the range today and it was pretty interesting. It definitely doesn't like when you try and over-swing. It definitely made my hands more active, because when I would alternate to my regular clubs, I would draw or hook them. We'll see if this helps or destroys my swings after a couple of range sessions. Has anyone else tried something like this? Adam

Adam This is my first post... hope I'm doing this right =8^) I built a whippy 4-wood for about $10, swung it for a couple of days, and yesterday shot my career round. Not totally due to the whippy club but it did contribute to a more relaxed, less anxious transition from backswing to downswing; a chronic problem with me. I used a $2 closeout head from Dynacraft and a $5 go-cart/bike flag shaft from Walmart. A length of 16 or 18 awg solid electrical wire, formed into a spiral, shims the shaft in the hosel. A BIC pen cap portion serves as a ferrule. At the grip end, I used a 1 ft. long piece of automotive hydraulic(?) hose (1/4 id, 5/8 od), epoxied in place, and then used compressed air to install the grip over the length of hose. I was tickled with the way it turned out and AFAICT it seems to closely mimic the flex of the commercial version. The shaft seems to be fiberglass (1/4 dia. for its full length) and 6 ft. long - enough for 2 shorter clubs. I built just the one club to see how it feels/works; 42 overall. Those first tentative swings rapidly revealed the hitches/jerkiness at the top and made the effort worthwhile. Dave

Adam A zillion trick-shot artists, ha.  There have been dozens who put on demonstrations with rope or chain connecting the club handle and the clubhead.  They hit balls normal distances with those.  See http://www.chuckthehitman.com/ The principle learned from the Whippy or other similar clubs is NO HANDs as your arms as passively as possible just allow the clubhead to flail through, the shaft straightening and clubhead aligning before impact due to the clubhead weighting design and centrifugal forces alone.  If you apply hand leverage, the shaft bends and you will almost miss the ball entirely.   You also learn to make a full connected turn with your torso simply flinging your arms and your arms simply hanging onto the club, no conscious arm action and certainly no conscious hand action.  The Whippy literature and Video contain drills that emphasize this principle
